Teen will be tried as adult in still-unexplained killing of man in Over-the-Rhine

A 17-year-old who prosecutors say fired the gunshots that killed a 25-year-old man last year in Over-the-Rhine will stand trial as an adult on charges including murder, a judge ruled Monday.

Police released few details about the shooting, including motive, although Healey’s family has said it may have been a robbery because his wallet was missing. Healey was living in Over-the-Rhine.

At a hearing Monday in Hamilton County Juvenile Court, Assistant Prosecutor Leah Dinkelacker said the teen, who was 16 at the time, fired the shots from a vehicle. The teen was a passenger in the vehicle, Dinkelacker said.

Police found Healey in the street.

Juvenile Judge Stacey DeGraffenreid sent charges the teen faces in Haley’s killing – murder, felonious assault and improper discharge of a firearm on a public street – to Hamilton County Common Pleas Court, according to documents filed after the hearing.

But charges the teen faces in a separate shooting that happened seven months later will remain in juvenile court, for now. That shooting happened Nov. 6, 2023 in Ziegler Park, which sits between Broadway and Sycamore streets in both Over-the-Rhine and Pendleton.

Dinkelacker said the teen was in a car that pulled into the park. He fired several shots from the car at an unnamed person, Dinkelacker said, and several vehicles were hit.

When he was arrested two days later, in Ziegler Park, he was carrying a loaded, 9mm Glock pistol, Dinkelacker said.

In those incidents, the teen faces charges including carrying a concealed weapon and improper discharge of a firearm.

Under state law, DeGraffenreid has to determine whether he can be rehabilitated for those alleged crimes in the juvenile justice system.

The teen will continue to be held at the county Youth Center. DeGraffenreid set bonds totaling $400,000 in the murder case.
