Fiona the Hippo is the Cincinnati Zoo's brightest shining star. Born shortly after Harambe the gorilla's untimely death, she was a great help in bringing back some positive press. We have gotten to see her grow up, and we've been involved nearly every step of the way.

One of the most amazing things that happened with Fiona the Hippo happened back in August of 2022; she became a big sister! Now, on Monday, July 22nd, Fritz is almost 2 years old, and he's getting media attention of his own:

I need to go to the Cincinnati Zoo , literally just to see these hippos. I have loved them ever since I first saw them, and I always will!

Fritz the Hippo was born on August 3rd, 2022, to Bibi and Tucker. He shares a mom with Fiona, but they do have different dads; her father is another Cincinnati Zoo hippo named Henry. Regardless, they live together happily, and Fiona has made a great big sister so far. There's no information about whether there are plans to add more siblings in the future, though I would love to see Fritz in his big brother era!

Until then, Fritz gets to be the epitome of the youngest child. He bosses everyone around and still struggles sometimes with sharing, being kind, and, obviously, minding his own business. In this video, he's quick to jump into the "grown up" conversation - it sounds like he's laughing! If there's one thing your younger sibling is going to do, it's laugh at you, so everyone is just smitten. It's nice to know that Fiona is getting the same treatment we all did!

    What Sounds Do Hippos Make?

When we're taught animal sounds as kids, we're taught basic things, like... woof, meow, moo, baaaaah.... I don't think there's a child on Earth who gets asked, "what does a hippo say?"

Despite that, hippos actually do make noise, and they have different sounds for different occasions. These include sounds like:

    1. Grunting: a low, honk-like sound to make their presence known.
    2. Screeching: a loud, scream-like sound meant to scare off their enemies.
    3. Groaning/Growling: a low, guttural sound that they often use to attract a mate.
    4. Trumpeting: a high-pitched, squeaky sound that they use to communicate with their bloat.

There are more, but they're basically combinations of these sounds. Fritz is mostly trumpeting here, and it just means that he's chilling. He's with his family, so he knows there are no threats here; he's just joining in the conversation. Life for Fritz and his Cincinnati Zoo bloat is easy as pie!
