Joey Wiemer is on the move.

The 25-year-old Bedford graduate and outfielder in the Milwaukee Brewers organization was traded Monday night to the Cincinnati Reds.

Wiemer most recently has played for the Nashville Sounds, the Brewers Triple-A team. He was batting .242 with three home runs in 235 plate appearances as of Monday.

The Reds sent starting pitcher Frankie Montas to Milwaukee for Wiemer and right-handed reliever Jakob Junis.

Wiemer was drafted in the fourth round by the Brewers in the 2020 Major League Baseball Draft after an outstanding career at the University of Cincinnati.

After impressing the Brewers in the Arizona Fall League and making the 2022 MLB All-Star Futures Game, Wiemer was invited to the Brewers spring training in 2023.

He was brought up to the Brewers early in the 2023 season where he doubled in his first big-league at-bat. He hit .201 with 13 home runs, 19 doubles, 42 RBIs and stole 12 bases for the Brewers, starting at different outfield positions throughout the season. He made the Brewers post-season roster as well.

Wiemer gets a fresh start with the Reds and is playing in the same town where he had a great college career.

Sports Illustrated’s Jeff Carr called Wiemer an elite defender.

“The Reds don’t have anyone like that, possibly in their entire farm system let alone the majors,” Carr wrote. “He has really high marks for his range, his arm strength, and his arm accuracy. He is also a fast base runner, which fits right in with the Reds.”

This year, Wiemer started the season in the minor leagues but was called up after an injury on the first day of the regular season. He had a stint on the disabled list, then was sent to Nashville. His last appearance with the Brewers was as a pinch-runner May 22.

Cincinnati assigned him to Triple A Louisville.

Wiemer was a three-sport athlete at Bedford, excelling in baseball, basketball and football.
