It was a frustrating evening for the Miami Marlins as they began their new homestand with the Cincinnati Reds on Monday and lost 10-3. This was the game after the Marlins won two in a row against division-rival Atlanta Braves.

Despite the Marlins getting 11 hits in this game, they only managed to score three runs. The biggest highlight on offense for them was a long 480-foot home run by Jesús Sánchez to get a run on the board after being down 7-0. Sánchez followed up with a double play that scored a run from third base in the seventh inning. Jonah Bride had an RBI single in the seventh. Otherwise, there wasn't much to show for on offense against Reds starting pitcher Nick Martinez, who went five innings and only gave up four hits and struck out five batters. It was his first start since May 22.

Marlins starting pitcher Roddery Muñoz didn't have a good start. He went three and two-thirds innings, allowing six runs on seven hits, three walks, and struck out two batters. Two of the runs were unearned due to a couple of errors on the same play in the third inning. Muñoz allowed Elly De La Cruz to reach base safely via a throwing error, and then Jonathan India scored on a ball thrown away to left field by second baseman Otto Lopez.

The Marlins are now 42-71 while the Reds tentatively keep their season alive with a 54-58 record. The Reds have lots of catching up to do in the National League wild-card race as they are currently six and a half games out of the third spot.

The series continues tomorrow night with Game Two at loanDepot Park featuring two pitchers with ERAs below four. Nick Lodolo will start for the Reds while Max Meyer goes for the Marlins.
