A pipeline has exploded and is on fire in a Houston suburb, forcing evacuations

LA PORTE, Texas (AP) — Firefighters are battling a massive pipeline fire in suburban Houston that sparked grass fires and damaged a nearby park. An evacuation was ordered for people living nearby. Officials say the fire began at 9:55 a.m. on Monday in La Porte, which is about 25 miles southwest of Houston. Video footage from KTRK showed a park near the fire had been damaged and firefighters pouring water on homes near the blaze. Lee Woodward, a La Porte city spokesperson, says in an email that officials have ordered residents in the Brookglen neighborhood area near the fire to evacuate.

Former engineering director for the Titan says he felt pressured to get sub ready

“All good here” was one of the last messages sent from an experimental submersible that imploded en route to the Titanic. The text message relayed by the crew of the Titan watercraft was shown during a visual re-creation of the journey presented at a Coast Guard investigatory hearing Monday. The Titan imploded in the North Atlantic in June 2023, killing all five people on board and setting off worldwide debate about the future of private undersea exploration. The founder of the company that owned the Titan was among those killed. OceanGate immediately suspended operations after the implosion.

TikTok heads to court over US law that could lead to a ban on the popular platform

The U.S. government and TikTok will go head-to-head in federal court on Monday as oral arguments begin in a consequential legal case that will determine the future of TikTok in the country. Attorneys for the two sides will appear before a panel of judges at the federal appeals court in Washington. TikTok and its China-based parent company, ByteDance, are challenging a U.S. law that requires them to break ties or face a ban in the U.S. by mid-January. The U.S. sees TikTok as a national security threat due to its connections to China. But the company has argued the law being used to resolve those concerns is unconstitutional. The legal battle is expected to reach the U.S. Supreme Court.

A strike early on Monday flattened a home in the built-up Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza, killing at least 10 people, including four women and two children. The Awda Hospital, which received the bodies, confirmed the toll and said another 13 people were wounded. Hospital records show that the dead included a mother, her child and her five siblings. Another strike on a home in Gaza City killed six people, including a woman and two children, according to the Civil Defense, first responders who operate under the Hamas-run government.
