The iconic Belvedere atop Circleville City Hall has been lovingly restored to its former glory, marking the culmination of a meticulous preservation effort undertaken by the Durable Restoration Company. The completion of this restoration project celebrates the rich history and architectural heritage of Circleville.

The Belvedere, a cherished landmark atop Circleville City Hall, had faced significant decay over the years. However, through a concerted restoration effort, the old structure has been replaced with a new one that adheres to the US Secretary of the Interior Standards for Historic Preservation. All rotten wood has been replaced, and the copper elements meticulously restored, ensuring the longevity of this historic structure.

“We are thrilled to announce the completion of the Belvedere restoration at Circleville City Hall,” said Julie Butler, Preservation Director at Durable Restoration. “This project embodies our commitment to preserving the architectural treasures of our communities, ensuring they continue to stand as testaments to our shared heritage.”

The restoration process involved salvaging much of the original cast iron, which was expertly repaired and reinstalled to maintain the authenticity of the Belvedere. Priority was given to preserving historical components, allowing Circleville’s rich history to endure for generations to come.

“The meticulous attention to detail and adherence to the Secretary of the Interior Standards for Historic Preservation ensure that the Belvedere restoration will stand the test of time,” added Butler. “Our team took great care to replicate the exact design and dimensions of the replaced elements, seamlessly integrating them into the exisiting structure without compromising its historic integrity.”

Circleville City Hall, designed by local architect William Doane in the “Romano-Tuscan style,” holds a significant place in Circleville’s architectural landscape. The preservation of its Belvedere pays homage to the city’s history and heritage, ensuring that future generations can continue to appreciate its beauty and significance.

Circleville City Hall’s belvedere project was paid for by the city using American Rescue Plan Act funds to the tune of about $590,000.
