Orange Public Schools Provides Extensive Summer Programming to Help Students Avoid the Summer Slide

ORANGE, NJ — Orange Public Schools hosts a robust schedule of summer programs annually that are designed to foster academic growth, creativity, and community spirit among students. From the elementary level to high school, the school district's programs engage students in a variety of meaningful and enjoyable learning experiences.
Across the district, the Summer 2024 ESL Advancement Program provided multilingual learners several opportunities to enhance their English language proficiency. Through instructional support from ESL teachers, students engaged in small groups and individualized instruction, participating in activities that improved their communication and writing skills.
"Our summer programs are designed to challenge our students academically while nurturing their creativity and social-emotional wellness,” said Superintendent Dr. Gerald Fitzhugh II. "Our district believes in providing enriching experiences that equip our students with the skills and confidence they need to succeed, not just during the school year, but throughout their lives."
Now more than ever, following the COVID-19 pandemic, and the academic loss that was experienced by students nationally, it is important to provide these opportunities for student growth and development over the summer to increase readiness for the fall.
Heywood Avenue School kicked off its Summer Academy with a strong focus on holistic development for rising grades 1-6. The first day saw students diving into Physical Education, Spanish, math problem-solving, and reading, setting a positive tone for the program. Throughout the academy, students engaged in creative tasks such as designing new book covers for "Ninja Red Riding Hood" and participated in vibrant theme days like Neon Day, wrapping up each week with energy and excitement.
At Central Elementary, the Summer Academy began with students familiarizing themselves with new teachers and classmates. They participated in various reading, writing, and math activities, establishing a foundation for academic success and peer connections.
Lincoln Avenue's Summer Program featured Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) and STEM classes, providing a balanced emotional and intellectual development approach. These sessions equipped students with critical thinking skills and emotional resilience, essential for their future academic journeys.
Oakwood Avenue Community School stood out with its diverse array of activities. Students compared mathematical concepts like perimeter and arrays, perfected their argument writing skills and even delved into policy debates. They engaged in hands-on learning experiences such as analyzing shapes, participating in Math Fact Races, and exploring music by choosing instruments to master. The emphasis on both academic and extracurricular activities ensured a well-rounded summer experience.
Montclair State University Professor Dr. Blumberg and her interns taught Oakwood students about plant growth and the role of worms in vermicomposting. This hands-on science lesson integrated literacy and environmental education, providing a comprehensive learning experience.
Cleveland Street School's rising third-graders utilized newly learned strategies to work in teams on solving math problems, enhancing their collaborative and problem-solving skills. The Summer Institute also celebrated holidays like July 4th, fostering community and national pride.
"The programs we have offered this summer have empowered our students to tackle their math problems with greater confidence,” said Cleveland Street School assistant principal Kashiff Foster. "Every day, they show enthusiasm and are excited to work with their friends to figure out complex questions."
Orange High School's summer programs focused on academic enrichment and credit recovery. Students engage in STEM enrichment programs, exploring science, technology, engineering, and math. They also received guidance on post-secondary options with visits from college representatives, setting a positive trajectory for their future educational paths.
Forest Street School's Summer Breakthrough Program emphasized strengthening reading and writing foundation skills. Meanwhile, Rosa Parks Community School's 21st Century Program included gymnastics, where students learned to tumble and prepared for performances, showcasing their physical abilities and determination.
The Visual and Performing Arts Summer Camp began with a buzz of excitement as students gathered to explore art, dance, and band. The program was designed to foster artistic expression and creativity, with children forging new friendships and experiencing laughter and learning intertwined.
The Orange Public Schools’ summer programs were a resounding success. They offered students a blend of academic, creative, and social activities. These programs enhanced students' knowledge and skills and built a strong sense of community and school spirit. As the district continues to strive for excellence, the impact of these summer initiatives will undoubtedly resonate throughout the upcoming school year and beyond.
