The suspect, Matthew Donovan Ward, 39, has been charged with aggravated assault against a public servant in the 230th State District Court.

Houston Police Department (HPD) officers A. Sosa, D. Gray, K. Redd, and C. King, all of the Central Patrol Division, discharged their weapons during the incident. None of the officers, who were sworn in between August 2024 and September 2019, sustained any injuries.

According to HPD Special Investigations Unit Detectives D. Hammons and M. Childs, officers responded to a shooting-in-progress call where Ward was reportedly firing a weapon into the air and at vehicles. As officers approached, Ward pointed his weapon at them and attempted to fire, but the weapon malfunctioned. Officers then discharged their weapons, striking Ward at least once. Ward fled on foot but was apprehended shortly after and transported to a hospital in stable condition.

The incident is under investigation by the HPD Special Investigations Unit, the Internal Affairs Division, and the Harris County District Attorney's Office, as is standard procedure for officer-involved shootings within city limits.
