    Old Village Mercantile in Caledonia, Missouri: a timeless landmark built in 1909

    Caledonia's Old Village Mercantile is an important landmark in Caledonia, Missouri. It's located at 219 South State Highway 21 also known as Main Avenue. When you step inside, take your imagination back when life was much simpler. Old Village Mercantile is housed in a building that was constructed in 1909.

    Caledonia is a village in the southern part of Washington County. According to World Population Review, the population of Caledonia is 132. The village of Caledonia was platted in 1819. Caldonia is the Latin name used by the Roman Empire for part of Scotland. Caledonia's post office has been operating since 1891.

    The village is also part of the Caledonia Historic District which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 27, 1986. This mercantile store isn't small; it is huge.

    What you'll find

    This store carries 24 varieties of Amish-made fudge, over 600 varieties of old fashioned candy, and homemade ice cream. It also has a coffee house that carries 25 different varieties and coffee bean flavors. There's also a coffee list that will amaze you if you're a coffee lover.

    There's also an antique gallery and you can't leave without picking from the selection of gifts available.

    There's a lot of Scottish history in Caledonia. Main street or Main Avenue was built in the mid-1800s. Caledonia's historic district consists of 26 acres, 33 buildings, and businesses listed on the National Register. The buildings include homes, churches, a lodge hall, a school, and eight craft and commercial structures.

    Main and College Streets dominate the area and reveal the important buildings and landscaping. Caledonia has the oldest Presbyterian Church west of the Mississippi River. It's rented for events and is owned by the historic society which provides tours of the church.
