Climber airlifted from Mount Hood by National Guard after falling 700 feet
MOUNT HOOD, Ore. — A man was critically injured and had to be airlifted to a Portland hospital after he slipped and fell about 700 feet while climbing Mount Hood. On Saturday, around 7:45 a.m., the 55-year-old climber, Chris Zwierzynski from Arizona, slipped while on the steep Old Chute route on Mount Hood's south side, located at about an 11,200-foot elevation.
Metro will consider asking voters to change homeless services tax to include construction funding
Funding to address homelessness — one of the largest issues in the Portland region — may be on the ballot again next May. Metro, the regional government tasked with overseeing the supportive housing services tax, is considering a substantial change to the program: using surplus tax revenue to build more affordable housing. The change will need voter approval to go into place.
Update: Five People Now Dead of Suspected Heat-Related Illness in Multnomah County
The Multnomah County Medical Examiner is now investigating a fifth death that may have been caused by an excessive heat wave hitting the Portland region. On Tuesday, July 9, the county announced a 67-year-old woman in Northeast Portland was reported dead on Monday, making her the fifth person to die of suspected heat-related illness during the heat wave.
