Tampa Bay Rays Make Major Trades, Signal Shift in Playoff Hopes
Tampa Bay Rays’ president of baseball operations, Erik Neander, faced the media after the team’s late-night trade of Randy Arozarena and Zach Eflin. Neander admitted that the moves signaled a setback for the Rays’ playoff hopes for the current season. However, he highlighted that the moves were made with an eye on the future and financial considerations. By trading these players, the Rays were able to shave off roughly $30 million from next year’s payroll. In return, they received five prospects and a player to be named. Although none of these prospects are included in the top 100 prospects lists, the Rays have a track record of finding hidden gems that may not be highly regarded by the media.
