    Updates: Tornado damage in Claremore

    UPDATE (5/29) — The City of Claremore released an update on the storm recovery on Wednesday. The City said there are approximately 3,500 City of Claremore residents without power in areas with significant damage as of Wednesday afternoon.

    Claremore Economic Development and the Claremore Area Chamber of Commerce are partnering to support local business owners who were impacted by the recent severe weather.

    FEMA is assessing damaged areas along with the State of Oklahoma and the Small Business Administration.

    “We are deeply grateful for the support of the 11 public power communities who responded to our call for mutual aid. Our crews are working tirelessly around the clock to repair the damage, although several areas require complete rebuilding," added Claremore City Manager John Feary.

    Seventh Day Adventist Church has a food pantry open to the public on Wednesday until 4:00 p.m. They will reopen on Sunday, July 2.

    The Red Cross will accept donations at the Claremore Expo Center on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. For a list of accepted donations, click here .

    Claremore Police said City Court has been cancelled for Thursday, May 30. Municipal court will be closed through June 20. To reschedule, contact the Claremore City Clerk's Office at 918-341-1325 ext. 141. for a new court date.


    UPDATE (5/28) — The City of Claremore released an update on Tuesday night that said linemen continue to work to restore power in the city. As of Tuesday evening, areas near downtown Claremore on West Will Rogers Boulevard, the Rogers County Courthouse, the Rogers County Jail and other circuits on the west side of town are set to be repowered. The City said some of these circuits will experience an interruption tomorrow morning as they continue to complete needed repairs.

    The Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management is asking residents to report damage to their property by clicking here .

    The City of Claremore said a monitored residential household waste drop-off will be available to Claremore residents from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday in the Claremore Industrial Park. The city says accepted items include spoiled food, damaged furniture, housewares, damaged playsets/toys and insulation.

    Rogers County Emergency Management said the courthouse will be open on Wednesday at 8 a.m. and return to normal operations.

    The American Red Cross said the Rogers County shelter for those affected by Saturday night's tornado has been relocated to Verdigris First Baptist.

    Red Cross released an update on its tornado response on Tuesday and said the Rogers County shelter at Memorial Heights Baptist Church in Claremore has been relocated to Verdigris First Baptist Church in Verdigris.

    Verdigris Baptist Church 25505 S 4110 Road Verdigris, OK 74019 Red Cross said the Humane Society is currently on site there with a trailer for people with pets.

    Police said a man was arrested for plotting to burglarize homes in the Claremore area that were damaged by Saturday's tornado.

    Five tornado paths from the weekend were identified by the National Weather Service.


    UPDATE (5/27) — According to Claremore City Manager John Feary, approximately 65% of power has been restored to the Claremore area.

    "The hardest hit areas are still without power, but crews are working around the clock to repair damage,” said Feary. “We are grateful for the support of public power communities who responded to a call for mutual aid. GRDA, Edmond, Miami, Skiatook, Stillwater, Tahlequah, Pryor and the City of Siloam Springs, Arkansas are members of the Municipal Electric Systems of Oklahoma (MESO) and crucial in supporting municipal electric systems during times of need.”

    The curfew in Claremore has been extended through June 1 to allow emergency responders to continue repair and recovery efforts.

    City and county officials request that residents stack green waste debris in lengths of 10 feet or less next to the road for cleanup. The City asks you to ensure the debris is away from gas and water meters. There is still no public disposal site available at this time.

    Starting tomorrow, the City of Claremore will open its community center at 2301 N Sioux Ave as a cooling station and recreational space for residents.


    CLAREMORE, Okla. — A tornado caused widespread damage Saturday night in Claremore, leaving 23 injured with 19 transported to local hospitals and three with life-threatening injuries. As of 9 p.m. Sunday, there are no confirmed fatalities.

    According to the National Weather Service, the tornado caused EF3 level damage. Officials have reported damage to homes, structures and power lines in and around Claremore.

    The tornado led city officials and Rogers County to issue disaster proclamations to assist with recovery efforts, which includes debris cleanup and power restoration .

    A recovery update site with information about the tornado, power restoration efforts and more was also launched.

    According to the most recent update, power has been fully restored to Claremore Indian Hospital and Hillcrest Claremore. Fuel supplies are slowly being restored along with power, with 2,048 customer outages as of 7:45 a.m. Monday.

    The city says the water treatment and sanitary sewer treatment plants are operable.

    Claremore Police say Claremore is open and the streets are clear . Businesses on West Will Rogers are up and running as of Monday morning.

    The American Red Cross has opened its services to the affected communities . A shelter was opened at the Memorial Heights Baptist Church for displaced residents. The center is now open as a shelter and will provide:

    • A safe place to sleep
    • Meals, snacks and water
    • Health services, (for disaster-related conditions), such as first aid, refilling lost prescriptions or replacing lost eyeglasses
    • Emotional support and mental health services
    • Spiritual care
    • Help reconnecting with loved ones
    • Information about disaster-related resources in the community

    Red Cross workers will distribute free meals and snacks, water and emergency supplies in Claremore once roads are open.
