CLAREMORE, Okla. — The Claremore American Legion held a fundraiser on Wednesday to help a local hockey team for disabled Veterans.

The proceeds will help purchase sleds for the Tulsa Warriors Hockey Club.

The club is made up of nearly 60 Veterans who play sled hockey and was organized in July 2023, according to the president of the hockey club, Donnie Buehrig.

“We are almost a year old and the purpose of our team is to help disabled Veterans. Some of them who have had issues, physical and mental, in their service. To get them back on the ice for therapeutic reasons and to help them get integrated back into the community,” Buehrig said.

Buehrig said his son is on another hockey club with the same mission in St. Louis, which helped inspire them to start a similar club in Tulsa.

“We believe that hockey heals. We had to bring something like that here to Green Country and that’s why we are here today,” Buehrig said.

They are holding a Learn to Skate event this Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.at the WeStreet Ice Center in Tulsa so that people can learn more about sled hockey and the Tulsa Warriors.
