CLARK – A 79-year-old township man was arrested and has been charged with attempted murder after he apparently barricaded himself inside his Stanton Street home with a weapon, following a report of shots fired.
In a Clark Police Department Facebook post, the man was identified as Kenneth Kutyla.
Police said Kutyla has been been charged with four counts of attempted murder, a first degree crime; four counts of aggravated assault, a second degree crime; four counts of aggravated assault with a firearm, a third degree crime and one count of possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose.
He is being held in the Union County Jail pending a first court appearance.
According to police, around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday officers responded to a Stanton Street home for a report of shots fired. When officers arrived, they found a person barricaded in the home with a weapon, the post states.
Police notified the Union County Special Weapons and Tactics Unit to respond. A short time later Union County SWAT officers made entry and placed Kutyla in custody without further incident, police said.
Police scanner reports indicated some nearby residents were evacuated during the incident.
Clark police thanked the Union County SWAT Team, Union County Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Unit and Rahway Police Department for their assistance in the investigation.
