Ambulance service to get more oversight in new agreement
Ambulance service in Athens-Clarke County will come under more regular scrutiny under a plan approved Friday by commissioners. Previously overseen by a board that hadn’t met since before the COVID-19 pandemic, National EMS – the private company that handles ambulance service in the county – will now submit quarterly reports directly to the Mayor and Commission, as will ACC Fire and Emergency Services and the county’s 911 center. Those groups are also required to meet with local lawmakers twice a year, an opportunity to answer direct questions about their performance.

Athens-Clarke County has announced Niki Jones as its Acting Manager beginning July 13, following Manager Blaine Williams' resignation, slated for July 12. Niki Jones Named ACCGov Acting Manager Beginning July 13th
During a Special Called Session on Friday, June 14, Mayor Kelly Girtz named Niki Jones Acting Manager for the Athens-Clarke County Unified Government (ACCGov) beginning July 13. The appointment follows the resignation of Manager Blaine Williams, whose last day in the position is July 12. The Acting Manager will assume the duties of the Manager until a permanent Manager is named to fill the position after a national search.

The 5 June ACC commission meeting was extraordinary. What began as a vote to accept the sudden resignation of Athens-Clarke County Manager Blaine Williams ended with all Commissioners, except Commissioner Culpepper, rubber stamping the Mayor’s FY25 budget and its tax increase. They also doubled-down by increasing spending! Kudos to Commissioner Culpeper for voting no on the budget and calling out ACC for excessive spending and taxes. More on that later.
