District 2 Dual Meet Wrestling Championships: Comets, Lions reach consolation finals

Abington Heights finished third in Class 3A and Lackawanna Trail was fourth in Class 2A when the District 2 Dual Meet Wrestling Championships were conducted Jan. 31 and Feb. 3 over three sites.

Both teams won quarterfinals and lost semifinals Jan. 31 to wind up in the consolation semifinals Feb. 3 at Pittston Area where they both won. Abington Heights added one more victory to finish 3-1 while Lackawanna Trail lost to end up 2-2 and fourth in the eight-team field.

CLASS 3A

Abington Heights began and ended the tournament with wins over Delaware Valley.

The Comets won the quarterfinal 43-18 hosted by West Scranton at Scranton High School.

Delaware Valley won two straight to come back to the consolation final.

Eventual champion West Scranton, also the Lackawanna League Division 1 champ, defeated Abington Heights (13-4) for the second time this season 40-24.

The Comets won two straight on the final day at Pittston Area. They defeated Dallas 52-21 and Delaware Valley 37-24.

Caleb Marzolino and Brian Heard each went 4-0 in the tournament with three first-period pins and a forfeit.

Marzolino improved to 28-2 with 19 pins. All three of his pins, including one when he bumped up from 215 to 285, came in 51 seconds or less.

Heard, who wrestled at 189, is 37-3 with 24 pins.

CLASS 2A

Lackawanna Trail (8-5) had four close matches, winning at least six bouts in each.

The Lions opened with a 40-30 victory over Valley View, but lost to host Berwick 42-33 in the semifinals. They bounced back to defeat Lake-Lehman 43-21 before losing to Western Wayne 34-32 for third place.

Both losses were decided in the final bout.

Freshman Kaylix Douglas pinned four straight 215-pound opponents in the first period.

Isaac Ryon, Brayden Clarke and Matt Shafer also went 4-0.

Ryon, wrestling at 160 and 172, had two pins, a major decision and a forfeit.

Clarke won two, low-scoring decisions at 121 and also received two forfeits.

Shafer picked up three forfeits at 107 after winning by pin in 43 seconds in the quarterfinals.

Scranton Prep was also entered in the tournament, but lost twice on the first day and was eliminated in the equivalent of a tie for seventh.

The Cavaliers fell to Western Wayne 60-9 and Lake-Lehman 42-30 while wrestling at Honesdale.

Louis Paris won by pin at 215 pounds for Scranton Prep (7-11) in both matches.
