Abington Heights junior diver Ethan Horutz earned District 2’s only Class 3A state medal with a seventh-place finish in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championships at Bucknell University.
The Class 3A portion of the meet was held March 13-14.
Horutz won his medal when the Class 3A boys diving on the first day.
Seneca Valley senior Isaiah Clerkley won with an 11-dive score of 570.40, easily outdistancing Governor Mifflin’s Alex Wodehose with 492.50.
Horutz posted a score of 389.10.
Abington Heights also had five swimmers, four of them sophomores, qualify to compete on the state level.
There are 32 entries in each swimming event at the state meet.
The highest Abington Heights finish came in the final boys event, the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Judah Donnelly, Jackson Wentz, Derek Williams and Jason Casper placed 29 th with a time of 3:28.93. Wentz is a senior while the other three are sophomores.
The top individual performance for the Comets was Williams taking 30 th in the 50 freestyle in 22.36 seconds.
Sophomore Gianna Vacchino was 31 st in the girls 100 freestyle in 57.59.
Casper placed 32 nd in both the 200 freestyle and 100 butterlly.
CLASS 2A
Scranton Prep’s Lukas Iannone earned a state medal in with his seventh-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley March 15.
Iannone qualified that morning with a time of 1:57.79. He also placed seventh in the final later in the day in 1:58.47.
The top eight in every event made the finals and earned medals. The ninth- through 16 th -place finishers competed in the consolation final and scored points for their teams.
Iannone added points March 16 with a consistent effort in the 100 backstroke. He was 14 th with a time of 54.43 and had the exact same place and time finish during the final.
Ben Kessler was 23 rd in the 100 backstroke.
The Cavaliers finished tied for 21 st in the 200 medley relay and 26 th in the 400 freestyle.
Scranton Prep finished 36 th in the boys team standings and 46 th in the girls standings.
The Classics were 13 th in the 200 medley relay in 1:53.98 Friday after qualifying with the 14 th best time of 1:53.92.
Eva Kaszuba added points Saturday, qualifying 16 th in the 100 breaststroke, then finishing 15 th in the consolation finals.
Ella Schofield finished 18 th in the 100 breaststroke and 20 th in the 200 individual medley.
Tessa Mangan was 24 th in the 200 freestyle, the Classics were 25 th in the 200 freestyle relay and R.C. Oakes was 29 th in the 100 butterfly.
