CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (WBOY) — The Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center is starting a new program that allows veterans to be taken care of in the comfort of a home.

In the Medical Foster Home program, veterans live in the caregiver’s private residence where they are provided with 24/7 care and assistance. One such home in Upshur County is ready to take a veteran, and another in Taylor County is working through the application process. The caregiver in Upshur County has more than 20 years of experience in the field.

Amber Hartsell, who is the coordinator of the program, said that it’s existed nationally for several years, but Louis A. Johnson just localized it in 2023.

She explained that selecting caregivers and foster homes has three steps. First, the caregiver must apply, then, a team from the VA, which includes a nurse, dietitian, social worker, and fire safety, inspects the property. Finally, the VA Director makes the final decision on whether to accept the caregiver and home.

If you’re interested in the medical foster home program either as a caregiver or a patient, you can call 304-841-6993 or email VHACLAMFHProgram@va.gov .
