Football Recap: Mount Vernon Starts Season with Loss at Home
Mount Vernon couldn't capitalize on their home-field advantage in their season opener. They had to suffer through a 68-17 loss at the hands of the New Diana Eagles. DeJuan Johnson was nothing short of spectacular for New Diana: he rushed for 215 yards and three touchdowns on only ten carries, and also threw for 92 yards and a touchdown. The varsity football team won 35 to 27 Thursday at the Eagle Stadium against Hallsville high school. The game was the first official game of the football season. “It feels good to be back out there and get the season started,” Barrett Cain, football coach for outside receivers, said. “Jacob Pettway saved some touchdowns on defense, and Seth Baggett did really well on kickoff.”
