CLAY, W.Va. (WBOY) — If you’re looking for a fun and unique summer activity that includes railroad tracks and time outdoors, this company has just the tour for you.

Rail Explorers opened its newest location Saturday in Clay, West Virginia, giving those around the state a new way to enjoy nature and history while helping the environment at the same time. Several state employees have worked on the project, including those from the DOT’s Division of Multimodal Transportation Facilities and the Division of Highways’ Central Forces.

The tours, which depart from the junction of the Elk River and Buffalo Creek, take place along the Buffalo Creek & Gauley Railroad and are completed on custom-built railbikes that feature pedal power, hydraulic disc brakes and an electric motor.

The 12-mile tours will take you through “the twists and turns of the crystal-clear water through the breathtaking forest, past the stunning Devil’s Sawmill Waterfall and over Sand Fork Bridge.”

Rail Explorers CEO Mary Joy Lu was inspired to start the company after viewing a Korean soap opera featuring a railbike. It officially began operations in 2015. In a press release, Lu stated that they are “incredibly excited” to come to West Virginia.

“The beauty of this area is unmatched — we are so proud to re-activate this historic railroad that has been a lifeline in the community for over 100 years,” Lu said. “This two-hour, eco-friendly activity is fully accessible to people of all ages and abilities, making this a perfect activity for families, friends, and solo explorers.”

Tours are offered Thursdays through Mondays, open to the public and pet-friendly. Bike options include a Quad Railbike (up to four riders) for $160 or a Tandem Bike (up to two riders) for $80.

Reservations are recommended and can be made on the Rail Explorers website or by calling 877-833-8588.
