The Northeast Association of State Transportation Officials (NASTO), a group of representatives from the state transportation departments of the Northeastern United States and the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec, recently awarded the Harris B. McDowell, III Transportation Center in Claymont, Del., with the best Quality of Life/Community Development Award for a medium size project.

The transportation center opened in 2023. It includes amenities for Delaware Transit Corporation and Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority riders also with bicycle racks and repair stations, 13 electric vehicle charging stations, real-time passenger information displays, and two Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant high-level covered platforms with windscreens, benches and USB charging ports.

The center replaced the outdated, flood-prone Claymont Train Station.

“We are ecstatic the project is receiving the recognition it deserves,” Delaware Secretary of Transportation Nicole Majeski said. “It was an incredibly complex project many years in the making, that involved hundreds of people from multiple agencies all with one goal – providing Claymont with a first-class transportation center that we can all be proud of.”

A $10 million U.S. Department of Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery grant funded the station.

The project was one of 106 nominations. The award was presented Wednesday at the Regional 2024 America’s Transportation Awards.
