CLAYTON — The Clayton Chamber of Commerce and Novo Nordisk partnered recently to present “Scaling Sustainably, Growing Your Business and Doing More with Less.”

Both Novo Nordisk leaders and a small-business owner highlighted their approaches to sustainability.

    Novo presented:

    • Circular for Zero — by Jeremy Keltner, the company’s senior manager in North Carolina for environment, health, safety and sustainability. The circular approach supports product design for reuse and recycling of plastics.

    • Symbiosis — by Lisbeth Randers, head of the secretariat for Kalundborg Symbiosis, a partnership between public and private companies in Kalundborg, Denmark. The partnership’s founding principle is that one company’s waste is another’s resource.

    • Sustainability in Design: Considerations for Construction — by Jay Forbes, manager of environment, health, safety, sustainability and security for Novo’s $4.1 billion fill and finish expansion near Clayton; and Julia Janaro, director of sustainable design for Hanbury, an architectural firm in Raleigh.

On the small-business side, Paul Auclair, brewmaster at Deep River Brewing Co., talked about the brewery’s sustainable brewing practices.

The event ended with a tour of the Novo Nordisk API plant.

“This event was a remarkable opportunity for our community to learn about the innovative sustainability efforts being undertaken by both large corporations like Novo Nordisk and local businesses,” said Dana Wooten, the chamber’s CEO. “We are proud to support and promote such important initiatives that benefit both our environment and our community.”
