CLEARFIELD COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — Maintenance crews in Clearfield County will be out this July conducting surface treatment operations that may affect drivers.

More commonly known as “oil and chip,” the work will be done on several routes the week of July 22. This maintenance treatment seals the road surface to keep water out, restores the friction of the surface to enhance traction, and extends the life of pavement between resurfacing operations.

Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours while crews complete the treatments.

The following routes will be worked on:

    • Route 970 between the Interstate 80 interchange at Woodland in Bradford Township and the intersection of Route 879 in Goshen Township
    • Route 879 between the intersection of Route 970 in Goshen Township and a bridge spanning the West Branch of the Susquehanna River near Tunnel Road in Karthaus Township
    • Route 1016 Keewaydin Road between the intersections of Rolling Stone Road in Covington Township and Route 879 in Karthaus Township

PennDOT typically employs surface treatments as a preservation strategy on roads with low traffic volumes and speed limits of 35 mph or slower. This activity extends the life of those roads by keeping water out, which mitigates the damage caused by the freeze-thaw cycle of Pennsylvania winters and delays the formation of potholes and the oxidization process.

PennDOT encourages motorists to “Know Before They Go” by checking conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles by visiting www.511PA.com , downloading the 511 Android or iPhone app, or by calling 5-1-1.

511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information, and access to more than 1,000 traffic cameras.
