Supporters regroup for second Clarinda PPEL vote
(Clarinda) -- Despite the narrow rejection of a special referendum earlier this year, Clarinda school officials say major infrastructure needs remain. Earlier this month, the Clarinda School Board voted to place a second voted physical plant and equipment levy referendum on a special election ballot September 10th. Voters rejected an earlier PPEL referendum by only six votes in March. Speaking on KMA's "Morning Line" program Thursday morning, Clarinda School Superintendent Jeff Privia says the first referendum's close defeat prompted the board to try it again.
Shen water, sewer rate hikes pass first reading
(Shenandoah) -- Future increases in Shenandoah's water and sewer and rates cleared the first hurdle Tuesday night. By unanimous votes, the Shenandoah City Council approved the first reading of amendments to the city's water and sewer ordinances for the 2027-29 fiscal years. Under the amendments, the city's water rates would increase by 1.5% each year--similar to the three-year hike approved by the council in June of last year. The city's sewer rates, meanwhile, would rise by 30%--mainly because of construction of the city's wastewater treatment plant's expansion and renovation project. Speaking on KMA's "Morning Line" program Wednesday morning, Shenandoah Mayor Roger McQueen says he was surprised that no one spoke on the proposed amendments during the public hearings.
