CLEARWATER (BLOOM) – On July 20, Glenwood Myers, a World War II veteran, will mark an extraordinary milestone as he celebrates his 106th birthday. Glenwood’s life is a testament to resilience, hard work, and unwavering faith, making him an inspiration to all who know him.

Born on July 20, 1918, in Minerva, Ohio, Glenwood grew up during the Great Depression, a challenging era that shaped his character and work ethic. In 1937, he met and married Mary Burnett, and together they raised five sons: Richard, Glen, William, Roger, and Dennis.

At the age of 26, Glenwood was drafted into the Navy, where he served for two years during World War II. He was stationed in Okinawa and South China, serving as a seaman and then a Gunnery Captain on his ship. One of his most harrowing experiences was surviving a typhoon that left his ship on the rocks. He eventually made his way back home via a B24 aircraft and an aircraft carrier to San Diego, followed by a series of train rides that brought him back to Canton, Ohio. His return was a joyous surprise for his wife Mary and their four sons, who had no idea he was coming home.

After the war, Glenwood resumed his career as a crane operator, a job he continued until his retirement. In 1948, he and his family embarked on a daring move to California, traveling in a 1936 Packard with a 27-foot travel trailer. Despite running out of money in Amarillo, Texas, Glenwood’s resourcefulness and the help of his brother allowed them to reach their destination in Bell Gardens, California, where they lived for 25 years.

In 1999, Glenwood and Mary settled in Clearwater, Florida, after spending time in Missouri and Tennessee. Glenwood’s life in Clearwater has been filled with simple pleasures. He enjoys daily trips to Wendy’s for his favorite hamburger, fries, and a Frosty, and loves feeding the ducks at the pond near his trailer park. Remarkably, he still plays the guitar and harmonica, often at the same time, delighting those around him.

Glenwood attributes his longevity to “good genes” and a life of hard work and healthy living. His father lived to be 105, and Glenwood has surpassed this milestone, crediting his longevity to God’s grace. His days are filled with activities that keep him engaged and connected, including browsing Facebook, calling family members using Siri, and watching Fox News.

As he reaches 106, Glenwood remains humble, viewing it as “just another day.” However, his family has planned a special celebration, gathering 20 members spanning five generations, including his youngest great-great-grandchild, a year-old girl. Glenwood looks forward to a Thanksgiving dinner, family time, and sharing stories.
