Cherry industry experts discuss the future of the Cherry Capital
TRAVERSE CITY - Cherries are dependent on the weather, and each year the bloom depends on how warm it has been. This year the weather was warm and brought on an early bloom, but it also brings on other issues, including fungus and invasive insects. Farmers are struggling to keep up with the unpredictable weather and the problems it brings each year Nikki Rothwell of Michigan State University Extension says, “I love the whole idea of climate change, but I rather we call it something like climate variability, because I always say if it would change, we can address that through research and and we can make those changes. But this year’s wet, last year was dry. And so these are the things I think growers are going to have to roll with … And I think having a research community behind them I think is really crucial.” The research results are given back to the farmers so they can implement the actions needed. Another thing growers are looking for comes from community by spreading awareness to buy local cherries.
American Spoon's Peach Punch
It's almost peach season in northern Michigan! While we wait for the orchard fruit to ripen, American Spoon is already way ahead of the game with their newest summer cocktail mix, Peach Punch ($21.95). Made from Lake Michigan Red Haven peaches—plus some lemon, lime, and passion fruit for a citrusy kick—a jar of this sweet nectar goes a long way. We first enjoyed it as recommended in a Peach Punch Cocktail: one part bourbon, two parts peach mix, and topped with soda. But our favorite flavor combo was to pair the American Spoon concoction with Mawby’s Green sparkling wine for a bright, slightly tart take on the classic Bellini. Find a jar at an American Spoon store in Petoskey, Harbor Springs, Charlevoix, or Traverse City, or order online at spoon.com.

The pantry just announced several big wins: Thanks to a grant from the Oleson Foundation, they will be able to purchase a trailer to help transport and distribute food. They also received funding from the Art and Mary Schmuckal Family Foundation to support pet food purchases to keep the pantry stocked. The organization is volunteer run and primarily relies on community donations to achieve their mission of “neighbors helping neighbors keep people with their pets.” Learn more at hoopspfp.org.

Outdoor M Signage: Suggestions?
We’re fortunate enough to have a place up north near Traverse City. It’s a condo which sees a lot of foot traffic past our unit. This spring, I was horrified to see one of my neighbors hang a wooden buckeye logo on the back wall of his balcony. Roughly 36 inches wide and whatever retched length that stupid O is. It’s big enough that the good people of our community can’t help but see it. Well this aggression will not stand.
