Opioid Funds Could Expand Quick Response Team Countywide, Support Drug Programs
Grand Traverse County commissioners will vote Wednesday to spend over a half million dollars in opioid settlement funds on three local projects, including expanding the Traverse City Police Department’s Quick Response Team to serve clients countywide, enhancing the local Drug Court, and creating a syringe disposal program for the homeless encampment at the Pines. The projects represent the first major disbursals from the county’s opioid settlement funds, which total $1.3 million to date and are expected to reach several million dollars more in the coming years.

TRAVERSE CITY — If you’re a big Amazon shopper, you probably have July 16 and 17 marked on your calendar for Amazon Prime Day. Prime Day is an annual sales event for Prime members on Amazon with lots of deals, and a big uptick in business. eFullfillment Service is an online order shipping company in Traverse City, and they have clients many clients who sell through Amazon. Efulfillment said those seller and Amazon shoppers hoping their package will not be delayed have nothing to worry about. “The biggest way we prepare is to make sure we’re staffed so appropriately so we can get those orders out the door and to be prepared. No one is coming, be organized and be staffed at a level that we can get the customers their orders at a timely fashion,” said Merry Hawley, eFulfillment human resources.

Boyne Thunder Poker Run roars through Northern Michigan waters
CHARLEVOIX — Powerboats raced through Northern Michigan waters on Saturday, July 13 during the annual Boyne Thunder Poker Run. The unique boating event features high-performance boats cutting through the waters of Lake Charlevoix and Lake Michigan on a 150-mile journey that starts in Boyne City and travels through Charlevoix, Elk Rapids, Northport, Bay Harbor and Harbor Springs.
First City Drainage District Eyed for Eighth Street Area
Traverse City commissioners will vote tonight (Monday) to pursue creating the city’s first drainage district, a major step toward addressing stormwater runoff in the city. While several locations were considered, staff are recommending establishing the first drain in the Eighth Street area, which has experienced high flows during rain events and quality issues where polluted water runs off into East Grand Traverse Bay – the source of the city’s drinking water.

TRAVERSE CITY - The Traverse City Pit Spitters came back to beat the Kokomo Jackrabbits 5-4 on Monday night at Turtle Creek Stadium. The Pit Spitters were down 4-0 heading into the 6th inning before scoring 4 to tie things up. Vahn Lackey scored the game winning run for the Pit Spitters in the 8th inning to get the win. Traverse City now sits first in the Great Lakes East Division in the second half of the season.
Molly Ashe Cawley and Berdien Take CSI3* Victory in B&D Builders Grand Prix
Molly Ashe Cawley and longtime partner, Berdien, added another international victory to their long list of accomplishments together during the second week of the Great Lakes Equestrian Festival (GLEF), presented by B&D Builders, at Traverse City Horse Shows. The U.S. rider and 13-year old Zangersheide mare owned by Louisburg Farm led the way in a victory gallop after the $120,000 B&D Builders CSI3* Grand Prix took center stage at Flintfields Horse Park on Sunday.
Workshop Planned for Parents on Social Media Safety
Several agencies are partnering to host a free workshop for parents on social media and how to stay safe online on Thursday, July 25 at Gilbert Lodge in Long Lake Township. The Coalition to Combat Human Trafficking, Michigan State Police Computer Crimes Unit, and Grand Traverse and other surrounding counties will be hosting the presentation, which will be given by MSP's Sgt. Travis Kirschner. According to the program description, social media can play a huge role in teens and drug use, exposing them to offers from dealers to buy drugs through various social sites.

TRAVERSE CITY — It’s been 34 years since the Americans with Disabilities Act was passed. “Historically, people have been put away when they had a disability. So it’s important to get people out and honor their individuality and their contributions to our community,” said Demarie Jones of the Disability Network. Disability Network Northern Michigan works to empower those with disabilities to success, and Disability Pride Month in July helps shed light on the continued efforts since then. This year, a furry friend in a wheelchair named Quinn is helping raise awareness in the Traverse City area.

Guy Eldon Molby was Born in Detroit, MI on Sept. 22, 1936. His boyhood home was in Dearborn, MI. The family moved to Thayer Lake in Alden, MI in 1946. He graduated from Bellaire High School in 1954. Guy went on to college at Sault Saint Marie and Houghton to study Electrical Engineering. He then worked for General Telephone Electric as an engineer designing and installing utility lines.
