    West Forsyth PTA seeks president

CLEMMONS — The West Forsyth Parent/Teacher/Student Association is looking for a leader after several recent efforts to find one have proven unsuccessful.

In a Monday email, Tonya Nelson, of the organization, said, “Your help is needed. The West Forsyth High School Parent/Teacher/Student Association (PTSA) is in desperate need of a leader.

According to Nelson’s email, after going through a nomination process in the spring and open nomination at the organization’s general meeting in May, no one has yet volunteered to lead the PTSA.

As many of you know, the mission of the PTA/PTSA is to “make every child’s potential a reality” by engaging and empowering families and communities to advocate for (and support) all children,” Nelson said. In just the past few years, the PTSA has expanded its support of the student body through numerous efforts. It has moved from two $500 scholarships to four $1,500 scholarships. It has also expanded a student clothes closet while support various student clubs and groups such as the academic team with new buzzers, the international student banquet with sponsorships and the homecoming dance which was the first the school has had in more than 20 years. Classroom grants, facilitated by the organization, have helped provided software, books, and equipment to supplement teachers resources. Meanwhile, the coffee and conversation mini seminars have been helpful to inform parents and answer questions. Pro topics included ACT vs SAT testing, internet safety, and students and mental health. Those services and offerings are made possible through a PTSA, which is made more efficient and effective with guiding leadership. “West needs some to serve as the point person for our parent organization, run our monthly meeting and organize our wonderfully motley crew of parent volunteers on the PTSA board,” Nelson said. Anyone that might be interested does not have to be a West Forsyth parent to be the president. All you need to do is join the West PTSA. “Any parent, aunt/uncle, grandparent, teacher, community member, educational advocate would make a great leader as long as you believe in the PTSA mission,” Nelson said. “You will not have to do this alone. There are executive officers as well as committee leaders already in place who will help.” Contact the organization  at
WFPTSAnc@gmail.com if you’d like to nominate yourself or anyone else. “We’d like to have a leader in place before freshman orientation on Aug. 7,” Nelson said.
