Rising DL Recruit: Camp Experience ‘Piqued My Interest’ in Clemson

A talented young edge defender from the Yellowhammer State traveled to Tiger Town last month and had the chance to work with Clemson’s staff while showcasing his skills.

Benjamin Russell High School (Alexander City, Ala.) class of 2027 defensive end Kalib Spivey participated in the Dabo Swinney Camp in June and wasn’t disappointed by his experience.

“I enjoyed the camp very much,” Spivey told The Clemson Insider. “It gave me a chance to learn and get better as a football player and person. I would say the highlight of the camp was when Coach (Nick) Eason taught me some pass rush technique one on one.”

Eason stopped by Benjamin Russell this spring to check on Spivey, who has seen his recruiting stock start to rise following a standout freshman season in 2023.

Spivey has put himself on Clemson’s radar early in the recruiting process, and the Tigers see a promising future ahead for the 6-foot-2, 230-pound pass rusher.

“I got plenty of feedback from the coaches (about) what to do in certain situations when I am pass rushing,” he said. “They taught me different ways I can use my speed and length. They said I had a lot of potential.”

The camp visit marked Spivey’s first trip to Clemson, and he came away highly impressed after his time around Swinney and the Tigers’ program.

“My first impressions of the school after visiting is that the program is run very well,” he said. “The coaches break down technique a lot, so it’s very easy to understand. I was very impressed by the things that Coach Dabo said at the beginning of the camp.”

Spivey scored his most recent scholarship offers from Florida State and Ole Miss in May. Oregon extended an offer in late February, while he also holds early offers from Alabama State and Auburn, which gave him his first offer this past September.

Spivey is also drawing a lot of early interest from other schools as his recruitment begins to ratchet up, and while Clemson won’t start offering 2027 recruits until next summer, Spivey’s camp visit made him even more interested in the Tigers.

“The camp piqued my interest in Clemson a lot,” he said. “It gave me a feeling of how the coaches see how I can fit into their system. It also let me see how the coaches develop their defensive linemen.”

After being invited to and attending camp, Spivey hopes to return to Tiger Town sooner than later.

“I have no idea when I can make it back up there,” he said, “but I would love to get back up there whenever I can.”

As a freshman last season, Spivey posted 72 tackles, 17 tackles for loss and six sacks.
