UNION, S.C. (WSPA)- Summer brings gardens bursting with produce and some families enjoy canning food for use in another season.

4H Youth Development Agent with Clemson Extension Mark Cathcart said the canning process is a great way to preserve food in a plentiful harvest but it’s important to can with safety in mind.

Remember to start with a canning-approved recipe, don’t reuse flat jar lids, never consume anything you’re not sure is safe, and test your pressure canner yearly for accuracy. Clemson Ext agents will test your pressure canner, help you find canning recipes and explain storage practices.

Clemson food safety team is here to help to find more canning and preservation info, as there is one in each county.
