Following a tough freshman season at Clemson, Billy Amick broke out in a big way as a sophomore with the Tigers in 2023.

Amick saw limited action in his first season in Clemson’s program in 2022, when he hit .105 with a run in nine games. However, the talented infielder burst onto the scene and became one of the best hitters in the ACC and country in 2023, when he earned first-team all-conference and first-team All-American honors after batting .413 with 37 runs, 17 doubles, 13 homers, 63 RBIs, a .772 slugging percentage and .464 on-base percentage in 46 games.

After that impressive sophomore season with the Tigers, Amick surprised many when he elected to enter the transfer portal, and he ultimately decided to continue his college career at Tennessee. The Batesburg, S.C., native became the starting third baseman for the Volunteers and hit .306 with 23 home runs, 65 RBI and 67 runs scored while playing a big role in helping the Vols go 60-13 and beat Texas A&M to win the College World Series.

Amick reflected on his transfer decision and winning the championship with Tennessee in a story by Andrew Chodes of the Index-Journal (Greenwood, S.C.).

“I knew we could do it,” Amick said of the championship, which marked the first national title in program history. “I wish I could have spent all three years here (at Tennessee).”

As for why Amick chose to leave Clemson for Tennessee?

“I just didn’t feel like (Clemson) was the best fit anymore,” he said. “It all worked out.”

A multi-time letterman at P27 Academy in Lexington, S.C., Amick was a member of Clemson Baseball’s 2021 signing class under former head coach Monte Lee.

“It was definitely important to be close to home,” Amick said of why he originally committed to Clemson. “And being in state was nice, for sure, my parents and my family enjoyed that. So yeah, it was a big deal.”

Amick is projected by various publications to be a first-round pick in the 2024 MLB Draft (July 14-16).
