In the 2010s, there weren't many programs better than the Clemson Tigers. The Tigers won 10+ games every season except for one, and they also captured two national championships in the decade.

Since then, the Tigers haven't been as dominant. Clemson has had three 10+ win seasons but has only made the playoffs once and has not appeared in the national championship yet. On3's Andy Staples thinks the Tigers' refusal to take any transfer portal players is the reason for their decline from the elite.

"I'll say what I always say about Clemson; just take a couple out of the portal," Staples said. "Just a couple. One impact receiver. One offensive lineman in a key spot. Just a couple. You don't have to do what Florida State is doing. I understand why you don't want to mess with your culture and continuity, but the reason you are not as good anymore is because you don't fix the things you can fix immediately."

Staples believes that other schools are surpassing the Tigers because they address their issues more effectively than Clemson. He doesn't think the Tigers will have a chance to compete for a national title again unless the Tigers are willing to build their roster in the same way as everyone else.

Ultimately, Staples doesn't feel that Clemson must rely heavily on the transfer portal. However, if the Tigers want to regain prominence, Clemson must adapt to the changing times.
