247Sports predicts Clemson’s trap game in 2024, facing one of college football’s best quarterbacks

Dabo Swinney and the Tigers have a massive 2024 season ahead of them with a lot of expectation and pressure.

Clemson’s ceiling this upcoming season is incredibly high, higher than many are leading on as the season approaches. There is a clear path to the College Football Playoff in the ACC and if the Tigers show even slight improvement on offense, they can once again reclaim the top spot in the conference.

I see the Tigers as an improved team from last season and that team was realistically a handful of plays away from being talked about in a completely different way. Clemson could be great in 2024, but they also may not be. That’s where we are with the program right now, but at least it’s exciting, right?

One of the roadblocks in the upcoming season, could be a trap game. 247Sports recently predicted that the Tigers’ trap game in 2024 is on the road against Virginia Tech. This could be one, but it also might not be.

Most of Clemson’s toughest games come with ample opportunity for preparation. The Tigers have all season to gear up for Clemson, bye weeks before games against NC State and Louisville and an FCS contest before the rivalry matchup with South Carolina. The trip to Virginia Tech, though, is one of just four true road games on the schedule and comes on the heels of what figures to be a hard-fought battle with Louisville. Night games in Lane Stadium are an opponent’s worst nightmare, and if this one unfolds under the lights, it is not hard to picture the Hokies staging an upset.

I get what they say, but I am high on the Hokies in 2024. Looking at Miami’s trap game, I was happy to see it was the same opponent because I believe there’s a real chance Tech beats up on Miami in that game if their starting quarterback, Kyron Drones, is as legit as I think he is.

Even if they lost to Miami, I could easily see Virginia Tech being a one-loss team heading into the matchup. At that point, it just doesn’t make much of a trap game.
