Excitement Amongst Receivers Breeding Lofty Expectations

CLEMSON- Inconsistency has plagued the Clemson receiver room going back multiple seasons.

While a number of factors have played into that, injuries have been one of the biggest culprits.

Although, with the start of fall camp now just over a week away, the receiver room is as healthy as its been in quite some time. For that reason, there is a lot of optimism surrounding the group coming off of summer workouts, from coaches and players alike, and that is starting to lead to loftier expectations.

“There’s a ton of excitement,” receivers coach Tyler Grisham said at the annual Clemson Media Day. “I think there’s a lot of expectation that we have. We’ve got guys that are that are healthy right now. Now that we’re here and those guys are working together without coaches, they’re excited.”

Tyler Brown is back after missing the spring recovering from a procedure on his foot, as is Adam Randall, who missed some time in the spring as well, and a heathy core of receivers is something that should help an offense that struggled to find any consistency in the passing game a season ago.

Then there are the two freshmen, Bryant Wesco and TJ Moore. Both are long, athletic and possess legitimate speed, something the offense has sorely lacked of late and adding two dynamic wideouts of that caliber also adds to the depth.

“I was talking to Antonio (Williams), and he’s like, ‘Coach, we’re so deep man. We’re so deep,'” Grisham said. “And and I think our guys, they want to play with top talent. They want to see freshmen coming in that that can get the job. They want to play with top talent in their own room and then also against a great defense. They want to have a great defense to go against every day in practice.”

Grisham also likes the variety in the room. With the longer, rangier guys like Randall, Moore and Wesco, to go along with the smaller, twitchier receivers like Brown and Troy Stellato, Grisham believes expectations should be high and he also believes it will allow offensive coordinator Garrett Riley to open up the offense.

“I’d say it’s the most excited I’ve been about our personnel and also just the variety we have,” Grisham said. “We can put anybody on the field and have really cool ways of structuring concepts based on receivers, running backs and tight ends… I think better than ever. So coach Riley is going to have a lot of fun, I think trying to craft some of that.”
