How Does Spurrier Think Clemson, FSU Would Fare in SEC?

College Football Hall of Famer Steve Spurrier recently joined the A Peek Inside Florida Gators Football podcast and gave his thoughts on Florida State and Clemson while discussing the topic of conference realignment.

Of course, the Tigers and Seminoles want out of the ACC, and Spurrier believes the SEC would be a fit for both schools if they’re able to eventually leave the ACC.

“I think FSU definitely belongs in the SEC. Clemson sort of belongs there also,” the former Florida and South Carolina head coach said. “But I don’t know if the SEC wants to go to 18 teams. So I don’t know, maybe the Big Ten would like to have them, who knows. But it is what it is. I think you just go one year at a time and then after that, see where you’re at and go from there.”

With Texas and Oklahoma officially joining the SEC on July 1, the conference now sits at 16 schools, and SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey has been adamant that the conference is content with its current number of members, saying at SEC Media Days that “Sixteen is our today, and 16 is our tomorrow.”

“Our focus is on our 16 members,” he said, via ESPN . “I have a responsibility to pay attention, and I’m certainly not going to fuel speculation on what happens next. We can certainly remain at 16 for a long, long time and be incredibly successful.”

With that said, it still remains to be seen how things will ultimately shake out in the ever-changing college sports landscape. And hypothetically, if Clemson and FSU joined the SEC, how does Spurrier think they would fare?

“They’d do very well, the way they played last year,” he said of FSU, “and I think Clemson would do pretty well. So, again, they would do better in the ACC as far as winning conference championships. But they want to play in the big-time, and I think within maybe two to three years, they will be in a different conference.”
