CLEMSON- One of the newest additions to Clemson’s coaching staff is known as the heart of the defense on the 2016 national title team.

Dabo Swinney has confirmed that former standout linebacker Ben Boulware is joining the staff as an intern for the upcoming season.

“Ben is going to come in as an intern,” Swinney said on Thursday before Clemson opened up fall camp. “He reached out to me a few weeks ago saying he was thinking about trying to get into coaching.”

Boulware earned the Jack Lambert Award as the nation’s top linebacker in 2016 as he helped lead Clemson to its first national championship since 1981. He was also named the ACC co-Defensive Player of the Year after logging a team-high 131 tackles that season and 10 tackles (two for loss) in the national championship win over Alabama.

Boulware finished his Clemson career with 352 tackles, 26 tackles for loss, 10 forced fumbles/fumble recoveries and five interceptions in 53 games (31 starts).

“I said the only way I will even discuss this further… we have a staff meeting, and you’ll have to be at that. Then we have five days of All-In meetings and you have to come to that,” Swinney said. “And after that, if you still want to do it, we can talk about the opportunity.”

Boulware did what was asked and is now the newest addition to the Clemson coaching staff.

“I’m glad he’s joining because he’s been a crappy fan,” Swinney added. “It is good to have him in the building.”

    “He is fired up.”
