The Browns will play in Washington in Week 5.York’s second stint in Cleveland was short, but he made it count. The Browns’ fourth-round pick in 2022 out of LSU, he booted a 55-yarder in the preseason opening loss to the Packers, and a 33-yarder in the second preseason loss to the Vikings. He also made two extra points and got experiencing kicking off under the new rules.The 55-yarder capped a nine-play, 27-yard opening drive against Green Bay by Jameis Winston, who could get the starting nod Saturday night in Seattle.On Friday, the Browns re-signed backup kicker Luke Havrisik, who’s in his second season out of Arizona. Originally signed to the Colts practice squad in 2022, Havrisik appeared in nine games for the Rams in 2023, making 15 of 20 field goal attempts and 19 of 22 extra points. He spent time on the Browns practice squad last year, and time this offseason on the Browns expanded roster. Take my career, take my finances, take any addictions, take any relationships, take it all from me. I can’t do it anymore. I just remember kind of opening my eyes and being like, that was weird. I had this crazy feeling of just God taking this weight off of me.”York, who nailed a 58-yard game-winner in the Browns’ opening day victory over the Panthers as a rookie, was cut last year after the final straw in his rocky preseason: a missed extra point and blocked field goal in the preseason finale against the Chiefs. He didn’t kick again in a game until he boomed that 55-yarder into the Dawg Pound against Green Bay.“Definitely the hardest thing I’ve been through, because it was the first time I wasn’t playing,” York said. “This is my first game since my last game in Kansas City. So it was hard. Because just knowing talent level, and once I went to Tennessee within the month I was kicking really well again, figured out what I wanted to work on and what I wanted to change. It was just this time of waiting when I felt like I was ready to go back out.”The Browns acquired Hopkins, 33, in a trade with the Chargers, and he went on to have a Pro Bowl-caliber season, going 33 of 36 on field goals for most made by the Browns in a season, including four game-winners. He hit all eight of his kicks from 50-plus to set a club record for the total from that distance.For his efforts, the Browns signed him to a three-year extension worth $5.3 million a year in the offseason, tying him at No. 4 among the highest paid kickers in the NFL.Hopkins has been idle all preseason while he worked through an injury, but Kevin Stefanski said Sunday that he was close to returning. With York gone, he might kick in Saturday’s game in Seattle, or Havrisik can handle the chore. Meanwhile, the Browns will continue to look for other trade opportunities, including possibly at third-string quarterback, where Dorian Thompson-Robinson, their fifth-round pick in 2023, and Tyler Huntley, have competed for the spot. During Wednesday’s practice, Thompson-Robinson took the second-team snaps against the scout team behind Winston, who could start in Seattle with Deshaun Watson experiencing some general arm soreness on Wednesday.With running back Pierre Strong Jr. suffering a rib contusion during Day 16 of camp on Wednesday, the Browns announced other roster moves on Thursday, including the signing of running back Jacob Saylors, and the termination of tight end/fullback Giovanni Ricci’s contract with an injury settlement after he suffered a knee injury during Vikings game. Saylors (5-10, 200) is officially in his first NFL season out of East Tennessee State. Originally signed by Cincinnati as an undrafted free agent in 2023, Saylors spent time on Atlanta’s practice squad last season.
