How could that be possible?It’s just another thread in the Guardians’ unexpected season.When the Guardians acquired Cobb from the Giants before the July 30 trade deadline, he hadn’t pitched a big-league inning. He underwent right hip surgery during the offseason, tried to come back too fast, and a series of arm injuries followed.Cobb (2-1, 2.76) managed to make three regular-season starts for the Guardians between trips to the injured list with a torn finger nail and a blister. His last start in the regular season was on Sept. 1 against the Pirates. Three of the homers came in the first inning.In Game 3 of the ALDS against the Tigers, Cobb pitched only three innings, allowing two runs on three hits with two strikeouts and one walk.“It’s really hard to articulate what it is that a game situation does for you,” said Cobb, “but you can go through all the bullpens, but until you get the adrenaline, the consequences of an actual game, it’s hard to sharpen your stuff to that degree.“It just gave me game reps. Even though it was only three innings, it was game reps, and I’ll take all the reps I can at this point.”Guardians manager Stephen Vogt could have gone with right-hander Gavin Williams or perhaps Joey Cantillo.
