Pan-Am Masters Games in Cleveland delighted visiting athletes, highlighting sports at any age: editorial
This month, Cleveland became the first U.S. city to host the Pan-American Masters Games, an action-packed, albeit somewhat unconventional, international sporting event designed more for camaraderie and fun competition than intense rivalries. The ten-day games, which ended July 21, were open to any athlete 30 and over who wanted to compete. And they came from all over -- from the Nigerian curling team seeking to introduce the sport back home, to Allan Wilfrid Martin, a 98-year-old runner from New Zealand, the oldest competitor, who told cleveland.com’s Kaylee Remington that he took up the sport after retirement as a way to stay fit. Martin credits his longevity to “a good rum and coke,” but adds, “I don’t recommend it for everyone.”

J.D. Vance is not a flip-flopper. He’s the rare politician willing to reconsider his positions: Benjamin M. Flowers
UPPER ARLINGTON, Ohio -- You often hear politicians criticized for flip-flopping. That’s a fair criticism when the flip or the flop reflects nothing but political opportunism. It’s a silly criticism when the politician changes his mind for good reason and admits it. Take Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio,...

Warhol was more than an artist, he was a sage, who cautioned us to preserve the beauty in a world of progress: Justice B. Hill
CLEVELAND, Ohio — I’ve long been spellbound with the art of the late Andy Warhol, whose museum in Pittsburgh is simply divine. Warhol was more than a pop artist; he was a “sage.”. That’s as good a noun to attach to the man after you’ve read or...
Too old to serve? It depends: Vincent Burke
CULPEPER. Virginia -- Before President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the race, the conversation was all about his age. But just how old, or how young, should our president be? The Constitution sets a minimum of 35, but says nothing about a maximum. If you go by the polls before Biden dropped out, the majority of Americans thought his 81 was too old. But was it possible the issue was more about his physical or mental fitness?

CLEVELAND, Ohio – I thought we’d have the answer by now. That’s what came to mind when looking at these stats: .215 batting average with a .632 OPS. Those are the combined numbers for Cleveland shortstops this season heading into Thursday’s game with the Tigers. When...
Talking Cleveland baseball in late July, imagine that: Guardians breakfast

Miss Manners: Gay couple wondering if co-workers need to be invited to wedding
DEAR MISS MANNERS: After 22 years together, my “husband” and I are finally getting legally married -- a bit tardy, as same-sex marriage was legalized years ago! We’re neither young nor rolling in cash, so we have a very tight budget and need to keep the guest count on the low side. I would like to include two or three of my co-workers with whom I’m close, but I’m concerned about other co-workers feeling slighted. How does one manage this kind of situation?
