My mom texted me yesterday to ask if I thought Kamala was going to win the democratic presidential candidacy. My mother is an immigrant from Haiti, the first Black republic, whose continuous economic and political upheaval is traced directly to colonization and retribution stemming from a successful overthrow of the French in 1804 and subsequent occupation and trade manipulation by the United States.

Happy 10 years, Music Box Supper Club: Cleveland’s Flats venue remains a home for songs and stories (photos)
CLEVELAND, Ohio – It’s a good bet that Mike Miller never would have opened the Music Box Supper Club if a flight he was waiting on had boarded on time. The story of how Miller came to own the club, which is making its 10th anniversary on Cleveland’s Flats West Bank, goes back many years. The venue was a nightclub in the 1980s, languished as a storage space and then became a venue that has hosted 4,000 concerts in its decade of being open.

The Browns, the dome, the stadium, the dollars, the dream – Terry Pluto
CLEVELAND, Ohio – It’s not just the Browns who need a domed stadium. It would also be a good thing for Northeast Ohio. It’s a much better idea than pouring $1.2 billion into the current Cleveland Browns Stadium, which is a mediocre facility. It also sits on the shores of Lake Erie, a waste of valuable real estate for a venue that usually has about a dozen events a year.

Miss Manners: How can I pay back my rich friend?
DEAR MISS MANNERS: I’m not well-off, and my friend is. She loves eating at nice restaurants. I can’t afford those, so I usually take her out for hamburgers. She knows my financial circumstances. I am very uncomfortable letting her treat me to fancy outings because I’m unlikely to ever be able to reciprocate. When I’ve asked her to take me to inexpensive hamburger joints, she will make excuses like she wants to try a restaurant she just heard about, and I’m the only one who can go with her. Should I refuse to accompany her? Or give up and figure that she can afford it, and that she doesn’t care that I can’t reciprocate?
Asking Eric: It’s unfair to split the check when we didn’t drink
Dear Eric: For the past 10 years, my husband and I have enjoyed dining out with a couple of our friends, always splitting the check evenly. Recently, we embraced sobriety and no longer consume the expensive drinks that significantly add to the bill. Despite this, we continue to split the check evenly, which doesn’t seem quite fair.
Dear Abby: Daughter, 28, seems hooked on a guy who shows no interest in being a responsible adult
