Daryl Ruiter details how Browns plan to use Mike Vrabel, why adding him is a 'no-brainer'

When the Tennessee Titans fired Mike Vrabel, it was expected he’d be one of the hottest names on the market. He was left without a seat when the music stopped, but he’s found a place in a state he knows well.

The Cleveland Browns have hired Vrabel as a consultant, according to multiple reports. Vrabel is from Akron, went to Ohio State and began his coaching career as the linebackers coach with the Buckeyes.

He quickly emerged as a well-respected head coach once getting the gig with the Titans, but they opted to go in a different direction in the offseason by hiring Brian Callahan.

How exactly the Browns plan to use Vrabel remains to be seen, but 92.3 The Fan Browns beat reporter Daryl Ruiter told Afternoon Drive that Vrabel should contribute both in terms of coaching and personnel.

“He’s going to help in both facets, both Andrew Berry and Kevin Stefanski have a pretty good relationship with Vrabel," Ruiter said. "Is Kevin Stefanski just keeping the seat warm for Vrabel to come in midseason and take the team over? (No.) Chill out. ...

“This is a no-brainer move for the Browns, to be able to use Vrabel this year, or until he decides he wants to be a coach again or land an opening where he’s a fit. This is a no-brainer for the Browns to bring him in and really pick his brain, use his expertise. I think the part that’s getting overlooked is this is not just for Kevin Stefanski, this is not just to consult on the coaching aspect of things. This also involves Andrew Berry and the personnel side of things."

NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport indicated Friday that Vrabel had been with the Browns during the NFL Combine, so it appears the writing was on the wall, in a way, for Vrabel to come aboard.

Regardless of what his long-term fit is with the Browns, if there even is one, having Vrabel around undoubtedly is a good for the organization.
