CLEVELAND (WJW) — Multiple Lake Erie beaches in Northeast Ohio are under a bacteria contamination advisory this week as temps soar into the 90s, the Ohio Department of Health reported.

Several Lake Erie beaches are listed as having high bacteria levels. The Ohio Department of Health explains they post the advisory, “when the level of bad bacteria in the water has reached unsafe levels and could make you sick. Children, the elderly and those in ill health or weakened immune systems are advised not to swim.”

As of Wednesday, these area Lake Erie beaches are listed under a Bacteria Contamination Advisory:

    • Villa Angela State Park at Euclid Creek Reservation in Cuyahoga County
    • Euclid Beach Park at Euclid Creek Reservation in Cuyahoga County
    • Lakeview Beach at Lakeview Park in Lorain County
    • Darby Creek Beach in Erie County

According to state sampling results, the bacteria found in the water was E. coli.

The U.S. Geological Survey also offers a helpful map regarding E. coli levels at popular beaches. For example, the NowCast offers estimated levels of the bacteria at Cleveland’s Edgewater Beach as being “good,” despite recent storms (which can often trigger alerts due to storm drainage).
