INDEPENDENCE, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – The Cavaliers are proceeding as if Donovan Mitchell is ‘all in’ after meeting with him over the weekend in Los Angeles.

Mitchell has yet to sign a contract extension with the team but president of basketball operations Koby Altman seemed confident that will happen.

“I don't want to talk specifics until we can, [but] we feel good about Donovan,” Altman said Monday afternoon as the team introduced Kenny Atkinson as their new head coach. “He's in a great space mentally. He's healthy. He was out there with those young high school players hooping, in a really good space. Really enjoyed the fact that him and Kenny could sit down and talk about the future, talk about the team. He is still under contract right now, so I think we can talk about him as a Cavalier.”

Altman and Atkinson joined Mitchell, who is eligible for a four-year extension worth close to $209 million, at his basketball camp in Los Angles and the organization came away with the impression that Mitchell is ready to stay in Cleveland.

“He's invested, he's really invested in what we're doing and hopefully soon we'll have more of a decisive answer on that [extension] for you,” Altman said. “But he's been great. He's been super involved and super collaborative and very, very much pro Cleveland.”

Atkinson, officially hired on Friday, didn’t use the weekend visit as an opportunity to make a sales pitch to Mitchell.

“We had a great sit down,” Atkinson said. “We also have a little bit the East coast, similar backgrounds. We didn't grow up far from each other really, if you think about it. So right off the bat felt a great connection. Talked about more personal stuff, family, his family with my family. So it was really a great get to know you session.”

Mitchell was acquired in a blockbuster trade with Utah in September 2022 for Collin Sexton, Lauri Markkanen and first round draft picks in 2025, 2027 and 2029 as well as the right to swap first round picks in 2026 and 2028.
