CLEVELAND (WJW) – Cuyahoga County Sheriff Harold Pretel says his department will be working with Cleveland police and other agencies to help keep everyone safe during the upcoming July 4 holiday.

He says he is concerned about the recent shooting at Edgewater Park.

“The crime and disorder that is taking place, we are going to address it,” the sheriff said. “We will have additional resources from all of our partners during the July 4th weekend to make sure everyone remains safe.”

The sheriff added his deputies will also be patrolling downtown Cleveland Wednesday through Saturday and will be on the lookout for street takeovers and reckless driving.

In May, large crowds gathered in Playhouse Square as a vehicle droved in circles around a ring of fire. On June 16, several drivers and large crowds blocked a few streets in Cleveland. A large crowd also surround an RTA bus on Broadway.

“The street takeovers are very concerning and I will call it a threat because it is dangerous to everyone,” the sheriff said. “It is something that is very high on our list and we will collaborate with Cleveland police and other municipalities.”

The sheriff and other Cuyahoga County leaders met Tuesday morning at the Cuyahoga County Public Works maintenance facility to help provide safety tips and reminders for July 4.

Cuyahoga County officials also showed off the new regional fie command vehicle that will used at upcoming events and emergencies.

“We want everyone to have a fun and safe holiday,” said Brandy Carney, Cuyahoga County director of public safety and justice services.
