    ‘In mourning’: Ohio stands with Cleveland after Jamieson Ritter shooting death

    (WJW) — Ohio police officers gave their condolences following the shooting death of a 27-year-old Cleveland police officer early Thursday.

    Cleveland police officer Jamieson Ritter, whose identity police revealed Thursday afternoon, was a four-year veteran of the police department, according to a news release.

    The four-year Cleveland police officer was killed just before 1 a.m. while attempting to apprehend a felonious assault suspect near Wade Park, according to authorities.

    A 24-year-old Cleveland man has been arrested and charged with aggravated murder, the FOX 8 I-Team reported.

    “This is a very sad day for the officer’s family, his family in blue and the City of Cleveland,” Cleveland Police Union President Andy Gasiewski said Thursday morning.

    Gov. Mike DeWine has ordered U.S. and state flags to be flown at half-staff on all public buildings and grounds in Cuyahoga County and in the capital until sunset on the day of Ritter’s funeral.

    I-Team identifies suspect in murder of Cleveland officer

    Nine other Northeast Ohio police officers have been killed in the line of duty in criminal incidents over the last 10 years, according to the Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police . On the Cleveland police force, those deaths include:

    • Shane Bartek, who was killed on Dec. 31, 2021 , in a carjacking on Cleveland’s west side, shot twice while struggling with the suspect for her gun.
    • James Michael Skernivitz, who was shot and killed Sept. 3, 2020 , while in a car in an attempted robbery near West 65th Street and Storer Avenue in Cleveland.
    • David J. Fahey Jr., who was killed Jan. 24, 2017 , by a hit-and-run driver while assisting at the scene of a fatal crash on Interstate 90.
