CLEVELAND (WJW) – Thousands of people are looking forward to watching Cleveland’s annual fireworks spectacular Light Up The Lake.

However, after a Cleveland police officer was shot and killed in the line of duty, safety concerns are growing.

It’s no easy task on any given year to ensure the safety of tens of thousands of people for the Fourth of July. It’s even more difficult to perform that task on the heels of a tragic loss of a 27-year-old officer.

Who was Cleveland police officer Jamieson Ritter?

“We take safety so seriously in downtown,” said Downtown Cleveland President and CEO Michael Deemer.

Deemer said his heart is heavy for family, loved ones and the colleagues of fallen Cleveland Police Officer Jamieson Ritter , but he knows police have an important role to play on Independence Day. It’s one he said they’ll be ready for despite the tragic situation.

“I mean, rest assured that the city is prepared for the fireworks event and that the Cleveland police in particular have a lot of support from their partners across the region at all levels of government to make sure that we’ve got a safe experience for people coming down,” Deemer said.

One of the most popular places to view the fireworks is Edgewater Park. But a shooting that happened less than two weeks ago also raises more cause for concern. During that incident, 16 people were spotted with guns and more than 20 gunshots were fired, injuring one teenage man.

In a statement to FOX 8, the Cleveland Metroparks said Metroparks police will heighten their presence along with help from the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Office and Cleveland Police Department.

“Guests can rest assured we are taking all steps possible to prevent future incidents,” director of communications Jacqueline Gerling said via email.

People FOX 8 spoke with downtown understand the cause for added concern, but generally feel this will be a safe event.

“What I’ve experienced so far, I feel safe,” Greater-Philadelphia resident Joy Schempp said. “I look forward to what the city has to offer.”

Many agree that the public has a role to play in safety as well.

“Have your head on a swivel, just be aware of your surroundings,” Sheridan Schempp said.

“See something, say something,” Avon resident Dave George said. “Just keep your eyes open and stay away from situations that look dangerous. Use common sense.”

Sticking with your group and having a rallying-point in case you are split up are also good tips for those who plan to attend.
