10-year-old girl fatally shot in Cleveland; no arrests made

The Cleveland Division of Police is investigating a shooting that happened July Fourth on the city's West Side and left 10-year-old Gracie Griffin dead.

It happened shortly after 7 p.m. in the 3200 block of West 125th Street.

Officers responded to the location after receiving a call for shots fired. Upon arrival, officers found Griffin, who had sustained a single gunshot wound.

"The officers immediately began to provide first aid, and due to the severity of the injury, officers transported the child to the hospital," police said.

Griffin died a short time later.

Police said no arrests have been made.

It's unclear at this time what led up to the shooting, as no further information was released.

Ward 16 Cleveland City Councilman Brian Kazy issued the following statement about the child's death:

"I am deeply disturbed and saddened by the unexpected loss of a 10-year-old in our community. This senseless act of violence is a tragedy that has shaken us to its core. I pray that our law enforcement officials and neighborhood come together to ensure those responsible are held accountable for their actions, while also providing support to the grieving family. Collectively, we must work towards creating a safer environment for our children, and all residents of this city."
