SMITHFIELD — It was an oversight really.

Years ago, when he obtained a special-use permit for 1.32 acres on McLemore Road, landowner Denton Lee Jr. imagined a host of possible business uses, and the county allowed those.

But Lee forgot one — health care — so he was back before the county Planning Board last week to add medical care to his special-use permit.

The need was a bit pressing, Lee told the Planning Board. “We have a sale pending on this lot to a pediatric dentist,” he said.

The fast-growing Cleveland community could use one of those, Lee said. “There are five elementary schools within five miles of this location,” he said, “so it’s obviously a good use for it.”

Lee said his hope all along was to bring medical practices to some of the land he’s developing in the community. “We’d like to bring health care services to this part” of the county, he told the Planning Board.
Amid the community’s housing boom, land for businesses is becoming scarce, Lee said. “We’re limited in the amount of commercial space in the middle of 45,000 residents,” he said.

Planning Board members had no qualms with Lee’s request to add medical care to his special-use permit. County Commissioners will have the final say. They’ll take the request up on Aug. 5.
