How the MLB draft order was determined, and how the Guardians got the No. 1 pick

For the first time in 2023, the MLB draft first round order was determined by a lottery. Similar to the NBA, the 18 MLB teams that didn’t make the playoffs the previous season were part of a weighted lottery.

Despite only having a 2% chance at the top pick, the Guardians won the No. 1 pick in December.
