CLEVELAND (WJW) – Producers say the filming of scenes in Cleveland for the new Superman movie was scheduled to be completed on Tuesday night after three weeks of production.

Clevelanders watched with great interest as Superman producers transformed Downtown Cleveland into the fictional city of Metropolis.

Movie fans who were patient caught a glimpse of the latest version of the Superman character, played by actor David Corenswet.

Many were fascinated by how a series of scenes shot in Cleveland will eventually be transformed by the magic of Hollywood into a blockbuster movie.

“I’m excited to see the movie and see it on the big screen,” said Lynsey Scheneman of Cleveland.

“It’s about time because we’ve seen how many Superman movies that have not been filmed in Cleveland. A lot them, and now it’s here and it’s great,” said movie fan Jarrel Finney.

Now that the producers have wrapped up the scenes in Cleveland, we are told more than 300 movie projects have now been completed in Ohio since the state began offering its Motion Picture Tax Credit 15 years ago.

“This is an industry that has grown over the last 10 years by more than double. There’s $243 billion every year being spent on production and we at the film commission are competing against 106 other countries and 37 other states for this work, so we want as much of that spending to come here,” Bill Garvey, president of Greater Cleveland Film Commission, said.

Garvey says as part of a nondisclosure agreement with the producers of the Superman movie, members of the film commission and other Cleveland insiders have been sworn to secrecy about the movie.

Garvey says the successful production of each Hollywood project in Cleveland and other locations in the state, creates what he calls a spotlight effect.

“It’s basically a giant billboard for the rest of the world, saying, ‘hey, Cleveland is a great place to come to do business in general, not just the motion picture industry but business in general,’ so that aspect of this, you can’t quantify that. You can’t pay for that kind of advertising,” he said.

Cleveland bartender Tim Vaughn, who works at Oliva in the Warehouse District, says even after work, the Superman cast and crew have been tight lipped about the film. However, he says the production created a buzz downtown and boosted the city’s hospitality industry.

“It’s been awesome. It’s always cool when they do movies here in town. It’s not just good for the city, but it’s also good when the people from the ‘burbs come down and get excited to see all the action happening. It just helps with business all across the board,” said Vaughn.

The film commission says Hollywood will soon be returning to the North Coast.

“While current filming is happening, we’re going out and pitching the next set of projects, so we do have a pipeline of work that’s scheduled to come and you’ll be hearing more about that hopefully in the near future,” said Garvey.

Producers say the new Superman movie is scheduled to be released in July 2025, and it appears many Clevelanders are looking forward to seeing the final product.
